The IESS stands for Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social (Ecuadorian Social Security Institute). It is an entity whose organization and operation is based on the principles of solidarity, binding, universality, fairness, efficiency, subsidiarity and adequacy. IESS responsible for implementing the Mandatory General Insurance System which is part of the national social security system.

IESS has the mission to protect the urban and rural, with unit labor relationship or not, against illness, maternity, work hazards, disability, unemployment, invalidity, old age and death in terms that enshrines the Social Security Act.
