Along with the Republican Party, the Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States and also being one of the oldest parties in the world. Today, the party supports a liberal and/or center-left platform.
Back then, the Democratic Party was originated from the Democratic-Republican Party which founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792. As Andrew Jackson elected as the 7th United States President, the modern Democratic party truly arose in the 1830s. The Democratic Party has gradually positioned itself to the left of the Republican Party on economic and social issues, as the division of the Republican Party in the election of 1912.
Since the 1890s, the Democratic Party has favored “liberal” positions (the term “liberal” in this sense describes social liberalism, not classical liberalism). In recent exit polls, the Democratic Party has had broad appeal across all socio-ethno-economic demographics. The Democratic Party is currently the nation’s largest party. In 2004, roughly 72 million (42.6 percent) Americans were registered Democrats, compared to 55 million (32.5 percent) Republicans and 42 million (24.8 percent) independents.
