Formed in 1983 as Southwestern Bell Corporation, the companny AT&T Inc., is the largest provider of both local and long distance telephone services in the United States, and also serves digital subscriber line Internet access. It is claimed that the company has over 77 million wireless customers, and more than 150 million total customers.

The current AT&T includes eleven of the original Bell Operating Companies, and the original long distance division. While it reconstitutes much of the former Bell System, AT&T Inc. lacks the vertical integration of the historic AT&T Corp., which prompted United States v. AT&T, the antitrust suit that led to the breakup in 1984.

At its first inception, the AT&T was one of the seven regional Bell operating companies which were formed by AT&T Corporation in 1983 and spun off from on the first day of 1984 as part of the Bell System divestiture. Upon divestiture, AT&T Corporation stock also split and spun off new stocks for each Baby Bell; Southwestern Bell Corporation traded on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol SBC.
